Erua, Hapa Hawaii Afa Tahiti (part Hawaiian, part Tahitian) was planned as Kalehua’s second CD. It is a project that was once shelved out of frustration and then nurtured back into completion with much enjoyment and learning. Kalehua began working on the album in December 2003 and it took over 4 years of working on it a piece at a time, letting it rest when things did not go well, and watching his evolution and changes within himself be transferred to the recordings until it became an album that he’s extremely proud to share with you. This album was produced in response to requests for a CD featuring Kalehua’s vocals as well as his instrumental stylings. Erua contains popular Hawaiian and Tahitian songs, as well as songs that hold a special meaning for Kalehua and his family.
Some of the featured tracks include Nani Kaalaea, written by Kalehua for his grandmother Hilda Hoohila Galbraith Kawelo for her beautiful home in Kahalu’u. Hawaiian translation by Lokomaika’i Snakenberg. A major influence in his life, Grandma Kawelo passed away in 1978, but thanks to the BYU archives, Kalehua was able to include her voice onto the track from a 1972 tape recording interview of her by Clinton Kanahele. Kalehua also wrote Wish A Peace in which his daughter, Cherie is a guest vocalist on this song, making her small but very significant debut.
Kalehua’s rendition of the Ke Kali Nei Au (Hawaiian Wedding Song) is the most unique ever heard. People often ask him who is the female voice on this duet and he smiles and says, me! With a 3-1/2 octave range, Kalehua handles both the deep baritone of the male voice and the operatic soprano of the female voice with ease and grace.
Fakateretere and Vaihiria, Vai Here E are well known Tahitian songs which he hopes will also become favorites of everyone here in Hawaii. Translated, they both tell enchanting stories of this exotic island.
